Importance Of Dynamics

Dynamics are how loud and how soft a song gets. Dynamics allow the listener to get into the song emotionally. Playing all at one volume is like listening to a speaker with a monotone voice. It's pretty bland. But if that speaker talks quietly to draw you in and gets louder as he gets more excited, you become much more interested in what he has to say. Music is the same way.

Listen to how I play Amazing Grace in the video. The first time, I play it all at one volume. It sounds okay, but it doesn't pop out at you. The second time I start off the song at a lower volume and slowly bring up the volume toward the middle, before going soft again to finish the song out. The second version gives you a little more feeling and keeps you aware of what is going on with the song.

It can be hard to focus on volume when you are first starting out and worrying about hitting the right notes at the right times. But if you allow yourself to become aware of the volume, the songs will become a lot more fun to play, because you will be more emotionally involved in them.
