Blues Comping

Today we are going to talk about blues comping. What is comping? Comping is the use of chords in your left hand to complement what you are doing in your right hand. I'm just going to give you three fun little chords that you can play over the 12 bar blues pattern that you learned in an earlier lesson.

This lesson is going to be in the key of F. Let's assume that you've got your piano solo all worked out and the band is ready to go. What can you do in your left hand that doesn't interfere with what the band is doing? Let's play over the one chord with a chord made up of E flat, A, and D. What kind of chord is that? It's basically an F7 with an added sixth interval.

When the progression switches to the four chord, just move your fingers to a D, A flat, and C. Use the same shape when comping over the five chord. The notes are E, B flat, and D. Listen to my demonstration to see how to use this lesson.
