Adding The Rythym

Did you know the piano is a percussion instrument? You hit the keys down with your finger and a hammer in the piano strikes a string. Up until know, we've been focused on controlling our finger. Playing the piano takes fine motor control, but is also a whole body thing. That includes gross motor control. Not gross as in disgusting. I mean we use big movements as well, arms, wrists, legs, and feet.

How many of you tap along to your favorite songs? It's all about rhythm. Tap out a little groove on your legs. Just like you would if you were tapping along to a song on the radio. Now play that same rhythm on the piano using just one chord. Now add the four chord to the groove.

I find that it's easier to find the grove if you keep your left hand simple and your right hand chords to do most of the movement. Once you get this down you'll be bring a whole other dimension to your playing, a dimension of rhythm and feeling.s
