Born and raised in Abbotsford, BC Canada, Nate Bosch grew up in a culture of music including secular, country, classic rock and more. At the age of six, Nathan’s mother received a piano from a friend of the family. This same individual encouraged his parents to put Nathan into piano lessons. Without that gift of piano, Nathan doubts he would have ever given the musical instrument a second look. From the moment his fingers touched the keys, Nathan felt a love for piano start to develop. He wanted to reach a level of playing where he played without thinking and not the other way around. He vowed to play the piano until the ripe old age of seventh grade before quitting. If the deadline arrived and he still thought before playing, he would surely quit. To this day, Nathan is still playing the piano.
Nathan took part in his first piano lesson at the age of seven. Music seemed to be a natural fit for him right from the start. Nathan fondly remembers his first piano teacher Leonard Shobridge. This individual showed Nathan the difference between making music and simply playing music. He also instilled in Nathan a sense of creativity in the selections play and was a source of inspiration even at the age of seven. Nathan also thought his instructor was an overall cool guy.
Nathan spent five years taking lessons at the Yamaha Music School. After this period, he would spend sixth through ninth grade playing at the prestigious Royal Conservatory of Music. He would leave the conservatory in the tenth grade in search of other genres of music. He felt bound to the notes on the page in classical music that the conservatory centered on. There was little room for individual creativity. Nathan could not gain a feel for playing someone else’s music. He also lacked strength in sight reading. Even though he left, Nathan still feels those initial years of playing music developed the foundation that he uses to this day to play.
College introduced Nathan to the art of playing in a band. The band showcased folk-rock music style that took Nathan’s creativity to a whole new level. From there windows of opportunity opened that drew on Nathan’s ability to adapt different styles and sounds with different musical settings.
Although Nathan had a classical music training background, he loved a variety of musical styles. He drew inspiration from musical legends such as Bruce Hornsby, Harry Connick Jr. and Dave Grusin. From these legends, Nathan developed his own musical style by adding big chords and strong rhythms. He utilized a strong music theory background to play by ear and improvise as needed. Nathan believes that the piano can be utilized as a percussion instrument in any style of music.
Nathan’s talents have created a demand as a studio musician. He records with his band Blue Rain in addition to various other recording artists. Nathan has recorded for Riley Armstrong in Nashville, Randy Bachman on Salt Spring Island just off the coast of BC, Canada and many local western Canadian artists.
Nathan is also sought after as an instructor and has led many seminars and workshops teaching the techniques that have made him a successful musician.
Nathan currently lives in Abbotsford, BC with his wife, Val and three children, Hailey, Sam and Megan. Music is an essential part of everyday life in the Bosch home with all three kids frequently dancing and singing at the top of their lungs. Mom and dad only encourage the racket.
Music is what makes Nathan tick. It allows him to escape when he wants to escape. He can focus when he needs to focus and he can worship when he wants to worship. Nathan can not imagine a life without music.
